The cult classic South Korean film Oldboy is among my favourite films of all time. I first experienced the film around 3 years ago, around this time I had begun to watch alto if martial arts action films and heard that Oldboy was a genre classic. Those recommendations were accurate.
The film's style grabbed me within moments of starting. The weirdly paced editing and strong cinematography drew me into the film's world and the perfectly written narration drew me into the character of Oh-Dae-Su. The concept of the film is pure genius and the dark surrealist tone of the film perfectly complements the plot.
Aside from the dark, disturbing and twisted plot, the film's greatest aspect is the action. The action reaches its peak, as does the film itself, during a claustrophobic, corridor fight sequence. This scene is probably among the greatest examples of a long uncut action scene, and it is jawdropping to behold in full.
Aside from style and action, the film offers a uniquely told character study and an in-depth psychological analysis of a complex character. We truly connect to Dae-Su, this in turn makes us connected to the events of the film. These events unfold in a beautifully twisted manner, with each plot turn and reveal coming at the perfect time and genuinely shocking the viewer to their core.
I genuinely love this masterpiece, and recommend it wholeheartedly.
I am a fanboy of Oldboy (2003)
