Why Do I Fanboy......Roald Dahl? Part 1

Roald Dahl and his children's novels played a massive role in my childhood and I have remained a loyal fan through the years. But why?

Well...

I effectively learned to read through his work, some of my earliest memories are of my mother reading me 'Witches' ages 3 or 4 years old. Eventually I learned to read independently through this book and a selection of his other children's books. I loved these books, especially Witches, I reread them with religious fervour and spent hours staring at the charming artwork. I learned much about what it meant to appreciate art from these books, specifically in terms of literature and simple illustrations. As I grew slightly older, and after multiple independent rereads, I began to appreciate the subtly and sophistication of these deceptively simple books. For instance, the ending to Witches made me feel differently every time I finished it. Sometimes sad, sometimes happy, always satisfied.
